Crowns
When a tooth is brittle, cracked, decayed, or damaged, a dental crown may need to be fitted onto the tooth to maintain and replace its structure. Your unhealthy tooth is clean and prepared for your permanent crown to be fitted in order to protect and restore the tooth’s health.
Crowns may be made from different materials to best suit the unique treatment required of your tooth. Materials include porcelain, zirconia, gold and other metals, acrylic resin, or a mix of these materials. Porcelain crowns typically have the most natural appearance and best stain resistance.
Crowns can whiten, reshape, and realign existing teeth, adding to a bright, healthy smile. Your crown is custom made to fit your unique smile and look as natural as possible. To make sure your crown is undetectable, we consider the shape and colour of your teeth overall and match it as closely as possible. If you would like to change the colour of your teeth first, you can discuss this with your dentist during your appointment.
preparing YOUR crown
Your crown may be custom fabricated and fitted in a single day at your appointment in our practice as a Cerec Crown, or may require two visits when sent to the laboratory to be fabricated.
Cerec Crown – The same day.
Your dental crown can be custom fabricated right before your eyes. In a single appointment, Dr Murphy can restore the health to your tooth, you can watch your tooth milling and complete your appointment with your final restoration permanently in place with no need for a follow up appointment.

Crown – Two visits
In your first visit, your dentist will reshape the structure of your tooth to remove the unhealthy and compromised structural damage. An impression is taken and the shade of your tooth is discussed with you. It is important to match the colour of this tooth to your other teeth for the most natural appearance.
A temporary crown is placed during the time your impression is couriered to the laboratory for fabrication. In your second appointment, your temporary crown is removed and your permanent crown is fitted.
